Default MAT SENSOR RELOCATING KIT POLL - WORTHWHILE or USELESS?

Relocating the MAT Sensor seems to be controversial, both pro and con, from the various forum posts. What has been your personal experience or opinion?

i noticed an improvement in throttle responce and just better overall in the way the car acts after i have been driving for a while, stop, start and drive again. I only had to pay like 12 buck for everything i needed to do mine. I moved the sensor to the airbox, there plug for the sensor actaully just has a generic two prong connection in it so i bought the ends from NAPA and some wire from ACE and moved it up i will post some pics later

It can't hurt, but save your money and don't buy the kit !
Cut the existing leads 2-3 in. from the MAT, splice in two new wires to where you want to mount it at,
then drill a hole, insert MAT, ALL DONE!
Cost=$0.00 :D

Unless you have a new chip burned, you probably shouldn't do it - Especiallly on a 90 or 91.

Might want to check out: http://www.thirdgen.org/messgboard/F...ML/001852.html

Warlock,

I thought I heard the opposite, that the MAT relocation only worked for 90-91 speed density set-ups, maybe I'm confusing things. :confused:

I have to say, I am an educated man, but that thread you referenced didn't help me out much, seemed a little over my head. Can you translate? :(

If your looking for a cooler air charge just do the TB bypass and leave the sensor alone. Just doing the TB bypass will lower the temps and accomplish the same thing...my opinion.

The basic jist is this... on all years, the computer knows the MAT temp is gonna be higher than actual air temp due to heat from the plenum, throttlebody warmer etc. and has already allowed for that consideration. If you relocate the MAT to infront of the throttlebody, it will read significantly cooler than before. This may cause your EGR programming to be off because the "EGR Enable Temp" will no longer be right. Also on 90-91 cars, fuel is controlled as a function of MAT and you may run too rich.

So, my thought is that relocating the MAT is a good idea and will cause it to be more accurate, as long as you modify the "EGR Enable Temp" and MAT Table accordingly.

Also, if you do mods to increase the air on a 90-91 which will lean out your mixture, then relocating the MAT may get you close to correct again... lots of variables there...

I have a 94 LT1 with the throttle body bypass mod also. I don't know one way or the other if the MAT mod helps, but it was pretty cheap, so I figured I would try it.

To be honest, I haven't really noticed anything after doing it, but I can say that may MAT temps on a scanner (running on my laptop) are 20 degrees cooler than at the original locaion. I've actually moved the sensor while the car was running and the MAT drops ~20 degrees immediately by moving the sensor.

I do have the 1.6 rockers which i am not sure just how much they improve airflow but there was a noticable difference when i added mine, so now i am worried about running rich or lean and not sure if i should leave it or go back to the stock location.

On the other hand if it started running rich wouldn't the computer compensate for it?
