The longer the better. That makes for more friction (thread engagement) surface to help hold the torque. Stick a piece of wire in the hole to check for depth to see what will fit. It will be no less than 1". The strength of the bolt is unimportant. Grade 5 is plenty strong.

3/4" would be long enough with a thin flange and an iron head. But if you can use 1", why not? I love ARP bolts for critical applications and use them throughout my engine. But for headers, especially the Hedmans which I'm guessing you have, I'd recommend a stainless bolt with a 5/16" allen head. Even with a 3/8" hex head on a conventional header bolt, some of them are a PITA with the Hedmans.

I was looking at SS bolts, but I can't find anything with a 5/16" allen head, do you have a part number for me to reference? The one I am looking at uses a 3/8" hex head (ARP-400-1210).

I have the standard assortment of generic autoparts stores, and home-depot style stores. However, I've never looked for anything like that... I'll hafta search.

We have one in Hickory and it's just a small city. I looked in the phone book to see what it's listed under and it was actually listed under bolts! I'm sure they'll correct that and make it more confusing in the next phone book.....
Local bolt shop should be listed under bolts, fasteners, or industrial supply. And I would also recommend you get the 3/8"x16 with a 5/16" socket head capscrew. I have 3/8"x16 with a 3/8" socket head capscrews and on some of the locations I had to use a hex-head bolt because the 3/8" socket head was too big or there wasn't enough room to get the allen key in there, even with a ball end.
I picked up all my fasteners at the local bolt store for the rediculous price of $4 and change, lol. No need to drop $30 on ARP header bolts. I would also recommend you get stainless if you can. I've had mine in for just over a year and the black oxide is now a bright red oxide, lol.

This where you cut off the short end of an allen wrench until it will get in there. Adapt, improvise and overcome!

I couldn't get it to work with my Lingenfelter headers. Had to resort to some 3/8" hex head bolts. The 3/8" socket head was rubbing up against the primary and I couldn't even get it in. On a couple other primarys, they were so dimpled, that I could not angle the allen key in there, no matter how I cut it. It worked out for me though, all the bolts are equally rusty now, so you don't even notice that some are hex and some are capscrews, lol.

Yeah, those LPEs are pretty convoluted! They look cool though. I've not put any on but I've got a friend who has them on his '85 racer. I remember he got aggravated bolting them up and his next door neighbor, a sharp young Asian fellow, came over and took care of it for him!
