Default Transmission Pan Gasket

My 84 had 63,000 miles on it when I bought it in 1997. It now has 95,000 and the transmission pan gasket is leaking fluid. I don't know if the fluid has ever been changed.

Everytime I have ever replaced the fluid and the filter in a car with high miles, the transmission has gone bad. My question is this, "Has anyone ever replaced the filter and put the same old fluid back in?" My thinking is that maybe the old fluid will not flush out everything and the tranny will be okay. Opinions appreciated.

that's the problem with not servicing transmissions every 30k.

the seals go bad... and new fluid clears the lacquer off and all hell breaks loose.

I don't know what to tell you...

Do a proper flush on it yourself per the tech tip. When reinstalling the pan with a new gasket, use no sealers and torque it properly. It'll be fine.

Had the same problem with my 87. Had the transmission, flushed, new filter, new gasket and new fluid. All has been fine for over two years.

I agree with the above--do it. I had the same problem with my 96, and had a small leak afterwards. Replaced the gasket at least twice and the pan once. It was a $6 seal around the shift selector shaft that I replaced myself...piece of cake (thanks to some helpful advice here on the forum). Unless you have a service station lift, that particular leak was hard to spot, but now all is well.

I had the same problem on my 93 S10 pickup, so last Friday I changed the gasket and put new fluid in it. The transmission is slipping bad now. I called AMMOCO today and the manager there said to make sure its got full fluid and even to over fill it, he said it won't hurt it. Even after changing the gasket I still have fluid dripping. The real bad news is for them to rebuild it would be 1400 bucks! So I asked him about the vette it has 76000 on it and I have had it 2years but don't know when it was last changed. He said leave it alone and don't take the chance in changing it. I don't know what to think?
