You are probably too young too know about Imperial measures which we had prior to going to French measurements 25 years ago or so.
Complicating factor was Imperial measure was different from US system.
For example the Cdn gallon was 4.5 liters and US is 3.8 liters.
Anyway a US pint is a little less than a liter.
BTW all of this is available on something called the internet.

Sorry if I'm hijacking this but I just changed my O/D filter and added topped it off with new fluid and now it has a monster leak after I test drove it. I can't tell where it is coming from because it looks like it is spraying out from above the O/D unit and leaking down. The pan is sealed fine. Can you overfill these??? is there an overflow?? Any ideas...thanks.
i recently like thsi past weekend had my tranny flushed and filled ......in doing this does this change the fluid in the O/D unit? If not how hard is it to change?
Thanks for the reply central, I'll look at the fitting. The only thing that I removed was the pan to change the filter and fluid. I talked to a tranny shop this morning and he thought I could have overfilled it and it is blowing out the top breather line or that the filter wasn't sealed properly (I did re-use the old hard grommet) and that it could be sucking air and foaming the fluid and blowing it overboard. Hopefully , I will get a chance to pull the pan and take a better look at it tonight.
Mid-Ohio is two days away and it looks like I will be having a couple all nighters to get this thing ready!! grrrr.
I change the fluid my OD every year. Just buy two quarts of Mobile 1 ATF and a hand pump to pump it from the bottle into the overdrive. You should use the correct size 8 point socket to remove the square plug. Also clean the gasket area and apply a good sealer. DO NOT over tighten the 10mm bolts that hold the pan on. Very easy job - just takes time.

If it was sucking air, the overdrive wouldn't engage. There's no way it'd make it to the vent, the vent should have a metal tube going up to the engine compartment, even if that's not there, there's a little elbow on top of the OD. And it can't be overfilled unless you got real creative. I don't have an answer.
A cable that runs from the tranny to the throttle. Your 88 doesn't have one. Only on the 84 and 85 modle years I believe. My 85 has an 87 tranny in it so it doesn't use the TV cable.
