Hope I didn't just hex myself after trouble shooting with a little help from my friends here and the FSMs, my 87 is running sweet-but the air pump, and I prefer to keep it, sounds like a vacumn leak-but doesn't test as a leak. Does you air pump sound like that? it's not a bearing noise, just kinda a whistling one.
Good question. There is an air diverter valve that kicks in and diverts air pump air away from the emissions system when car is up to temp and at idle- sounds kind of like a whistling duck/honk sound in front of the engine above the harmonic damper. That is normal and you can hear it cycle on and off. It could also be the vanes in the air pump dragging in the impeller housing. My air pump went out - making all kinds unsual racket. Purchased a rebuilt mine and changed it out. All well again. By the way the cheapest place I found- NAPA. I you have a hose leak on the air pump itself, it will sound like a vacuum leak on the intake side. Hope info helps.
Thanks, yeah, I'm sure it's not a vacumn leak-as everything is running sweet-just an irritating noise, and you described part of it that sounds like mine.
