Re: How much water/dexcool do I put in? (Dakotarota)
For the Chicago area a 50/50 mix should be fine. A cheap coolant hydrometer will tell you when you have it right. Sorry, but I'm away from home so can't look it up for you.
Re: How much water/dexcool do I put in? (-=Jeff=-)
There is a service tech report about how only 95 and 96's are supposed to use Dexcool. Something weird about the coolant that makes it in compatible with other systems.
Re: How much water/dexcool do I put in? (Dakotarota)
From what I understand from some of the radiator shops and dealers once you have the regular coolant in no mater how many times you flush it you can never get all of it out. Once the coolant gets on the metal it builds a protective film and bonds on the metal, this is also what is used to prevent corrosion. Regular coolant and Dexcool does not mix period. Use what’s recommended for the car on this issue! I would hate to see you make a posting later with problems.

I agree...don't change. It seems like there is some debate on the hazards of the two getting mixed so I wouldn't risk it...even with a total flush. That green stuff has been working for many years before Dexcool.

That is interesting considering when I changed over a year ago I email Texaco about it first. They basically said if you choose to swap but don't get all the green coolant out.. the worst problem you would have is you would have to change the coolant at a earlier interval since there is still some green in the system... but they said a little green with the Dexcool will not hurt anything..
I am not trying to start a argument.. Just stating what I was told
I have been running Dexcool for 2 years. NO PROBLEMS
Re: How much water/dexcool do I put in? (-=Jeff=-)
At first I was sold on the Dexcool because of the longevity of the coolant and I want to put the best coolant I could buy for my LT-5 engine since these engines are pretty much no longer available. I have talk to a lot of people about doing this. Also I heard GM has tech bulletins out on this issue. What can I say, I’m just like you no arguments here, just learning the facts cause it would be hell for my to replace a LT-5 if something happened. Just like they say change the coolant often and you won’t have any problems.

Art, I would do that same thing with a ZR1.. I honestly replaced the Motor when I switched.. along with the heads and heater core. If I had a ZR-1 I would use what came with it from the factory.. as for my 89.. those motors in essence are a dime a dozen...
