Had starter tested it was bad, will get it on Monday. Here is my question,
in the service manual it states! remove [starter and shims] when I removed the starter there were on shims. It also shows the shims in the book, so will I need to get shims for the new starter. Also it says [sealer must be applied]
after the starter is installed. where do you put the sealer and what kind is it.

Also thanks jfb for the info on testing.
The shims are not always necessary. Install the new starter (it may come with shims) and try it, if noisy then start installing shims. I have never put any sealer on starters?
After you install the starter, you need to check the clearance between flywheel and starter pinion gear. The shims are used to adjust the clearance--not always necessary. If you need to adjust clearance and don't have shims...you can use washers.
