I had previously posted a thread about taking my 85 through the car wash with the lid up and the cap off of my gas tank. Once fixed (almost), this was what I posted:
I appreciate all of your help!!!!! The car is running and running fairly well, considering... I probably need to change the filter a few times as was previously said. But on to new problems...
After I got it running, took it for a ride, I noticed it wasn't going back into park. The shifter would go to park, but the car would still be in reverse. So we jack it up, got under it, and noticed one of the bolts holding the shifter in the right place was out, and the other one was loose. So we tighten all that back up and all's well, but the ignition still won't crank periodically as if the kill switch is detecting that the transmission is in another gear other than park or neutral. Soooo.....could this bolt coming out effect the ignition interrupt, and if so, where is the switch?
Thanks again...
(it seems like everything happens at once!!!)
then this was posted...
You should start a new post with your new problem. You'll get better results...
The switch is on the side of the shifter under the console. I would not think that your cable trouble would have anything to do with this as they are separate.

Thanks for the info.
If this isn't associated with the cable, could it still be the switch? Do these just go bad (just like every other part on my 21 year old vehicle.....)???? If so, what is the actual name of the part so I can order one? Any other ideas would be appreciated!
Thanks

It is called a neutral safety switch. It is easy to take off the console cover and you will see it, and can see if any adjustment is needed.
You didn't take it thru the car wash with the windows down did you?

Chuckles.... Chuckles.... Everyone's a comedian.... Just kiddin, but it was a pretty boneheaded thing to do! Thanks
