I have 96 LT4 w/J55's. I started my car up on monday to drive to work, and my brake pedal was hard. Little to no braking power, pedal stays hard when the car is started, and when off. I checked the brake booster vaccum line that goes into the front of the booster to the intake manifold and there is no leaks. The car idles fine, nothing out of the ordinary. I pulled the line off the intake manifold while the car was running, and there was still vaccum. Should there be suction from the into manifold to the booster, or from the booster to the mainfold? Right now air is being pulled from the booster into the manifold. I don't know much about boosters but that seems to be right to me.
I have heard there is a check valve near/around the brake master cylinder that can go bad. I went to my local dealer and the only thing he could find was a check valve between the cylinder and the booster. Is this the valve that could be causing my problems?
Been here before get ready to start paying out. Master cylinder and/or Brake booster. Replace both at the same time cuz its a major PITA. Ill buy a new care before I do that again. Best of luck BTW your looking at atleast 200$$ of parts not including your own labor
It's looking like its going that way. Should I go ahead and do the master cylinder too? I know the brake booster is done, but should the cylinder be alright?
generally there is a crack in the Booster. I had mine, it was near the exhaust header (it was a very difficult to see crack). With a Booster cracked you wont have any vacuum or idle problems, but if the master cylinder is bad, you wont break very well at all. With a cracked booster its a hard pedal but able to brake.
I think my master is okay, it doesn't leak or anything. Ill just replace the booster, and and hope for the best. I am getting one for $126, does that sound right?
I replaced both on my sons 91 L98. I"m almost 70 years old , over weight & still I crawled under there & replaced it While my 94 year old mother handed me the wrenches & pulled me out from under there by my feet.
Hard no,Get some cushions on the floor, get comfortable & get after it.
