Default MAF or Relays?

Hello all! Long time no post (almost 3 months )

A few months back (yes, I know I'm a terrible owner for this..) my SES light came on. So I hook up the OBD-I reader to the '88 and pull the codes. The code I keep getting is the code, which says that it's either the MAF or the MAF relays (Sorry that I don't remember the code number at the moment.. this is why I hate posting when I'm tired..)

anyways..

When I start my car, it jumps around for a good 5-6 seconds (from cold) and then kicks in and I have no problem for the rest of the ride. If I put 'er in drive before she has a chance to smooth out, she jerks around for a while before finally catching back up or kicks back in when the gear changes (automatic tranny).

Does this sound like the MAF to you or the relays? I honestly think it sounds like the MAF, but I don't want to throw $300 in there if I can replace the $10 relay! I just replaced both relays about 5 months ago, but I'm hoping that maybe I just got a couple of bad relays. I have 2 more payments on her and she's finally mine, but I don't want to turn this into 3 more payments just by replacing the MAF!

If you need to know the exact code, please let me know and I'll go out and get it. If you know which one I'm referring to, that'll be great

Thanx in advance!

~Derek

(I'm glad to be back to the forum.. I've been working so much lately.. they got rid of my boss and gave me all of his work)

If the relays are new, and this came back, then its the MAF itself.

Otherwise I would tell you to replace the relays first.

*sigh* That's what I was afraid of .. lol

I guess I'll have to put in the money. I HATE driving around with an SES light, so this will be an expense, which would justify as a good reason for pushing back my car payments..

before you throw $300+ at it why not try posting for used on this forum, or check out vette2vette for used one? just a thought.

I've had my eye on the Gretti high-performance MAF for quite some time, now.. I'm going to do some research on it to see if it's worth it. Since I wanted to go with it in the first place, I figure that I should spoil myself a little, since I haven't done so in such a long time =)

Default sensor is possible

My 89 six speed had a recurring light and coded to the MAF...I saw a posting that identified a 3rd sensor...fuel pump located on the near the firewall on the drivers side. changed all 3 and reinstalled the Bosch that I changed 1st and the problem went away.

The aftermarket MAF(2) that I tried both made the car run like crap and reduced mileage more than 10mpg.

So I recommend checking your year to see if you have the fuel pump relay...same part number as the burn down and power relays.

It fixed mine!!

That's actually why I replaced both relays before. Starting in about '88, I believe it was, they made the Burn-Off and Power relays for the MAF the same p/n as the fuel pump relay.

That's been me posting about the 3rd relay regarding the MAF. If you have a FSM you can read it for yourself-what it essentially says is the MAF relays get their required voltage "through control of the fuel pump relay" to tired tonite to look it up and quote it again! but I'd rather spend $10 on a FP relay than $300 on a new MAF. While you're at it check the wiring going into the FPm relay, the insulation shrinks an exposes bare wires-in my case they were coming in contact with each other.
