What you want to do is retract the pintle fully before installing it. To do this, hold the IAC firmly in one hand with the pintle under your thumb like a pushbutton handle. Now, rock (gently) the pintle back and forth while pushing the pintle down towards the housing. The pintle should make a ratcheting sound as you force it to retract.
