Default shifter problem

I just got done with my flywheel and clutch change and was ready to finish . the shifter reverse button does it go with the set screw up or down---I have it up and it works but with the shifter **** on I have a one half inch of steel shifter shaft showing and can see the allen screw. It dosnt look right but it took all winter to do so who knows. Any one out there know what way is up.

A little more info ---the car is a 1990 vette conv. l98 with the six speed. I just dont remember seeing the allen screw before I took it apart. Anyone have a car like this at home? Could you please look and see if about 1/2'' of the inner metal part of the shifter and the allen screw shows. Thanks guys---

[pllz fill in a little more on your profile, like year, car, first name, where you live, etc.; makes life a little more friendly...]

Can't answer your shifter question, but wadr, where did you hear/read the tire pressure on your new tires should be at 51 or 44 pounds? If you're reading the sidewall for the pressures, that is the max for max load rating. It is NOT the drive around pressure. Either your door panel or your manual will tell you the pressure and I'd guess it's closer to 31 all around with a little "tweaking" room. To me, tweaking room would add anywhere from 1-4 pounds. Unless you have some specific and known handling issues, even 44 on the street is not a reasonable pressure.

Good luck with the shifter/reverse lockout issue.

Set screw on mine is above the lockout. There's nothing holding the shift boot up, so sometimes it slides down the shifter exposing the bare steel.

Mine has a c-clip under the boot. It holds it up to the bottom of the reverse lockout button. When I lift up on the button it slides up over the screw.but when its down and im driving I can see the set screw. Everything works good so the heck with it--must have been that way all along---my brain could be a little fryed allso

That doesn't quite make sense. Pics would be worth a thousand words here. I should get a pic of mine.

Default shifter pic

Finally I found out how to post the pics of my shifter showing the exposed allen bolt and some shifter shaft. I dont have any parts left over and it works fine--maybe it was like that when I took the car apart last year. What do you guys think? 1990 vette conv.

That is installed correctly. That gap is necessary for the reverse lockout to lift.

You could paint it I guess.

I have a 92 6 speed and there is nothing wrong with your shifter. Yes you can see the setscrew.
You could paint the shiny part matt black with a small paintbrush like I did and it don't look so obvious

I just took a trip last weekend and couldn't get it in reverse.:-o
Guess the reverse collar/setscrew cheap plastic thing finally quit grabbing onto the internal shaft. (The plastic part has a crack right across where the setscrew is.) I can get the small plastic part . . . do ya think that's all I need to make it work?

With the new one, just put a tiny bit of blue threadlock on there and don't tighten it too much.

The shaft has a keyway the set screw pulls on, it doesn't pull it by clamping.

You know what . . . . the screw must be stripped 'cause it's not getting tight.:-o

Does the set screw thread right into the rod???

Someone told me that if it stops working, just replace the plastic piece. Perhaps that was bad logic . . . or anti-logic.;-)

Central Coaster, thanks for info. Sounds like I may have a stripped-out lock screw or the hole where it threads in to.

Those things can be a B***h. I thought I had striped mind out, but the little screw just wasn't in the indent. Play with it some, it will work.
