Removing steering lock on my 87
Just wondering if anyone has removed the steering lock from their earlier C4. I have to replace the lock set and would like to remove the wheel locking mechanism at that time. Any comments or direction would be appreciated.
Regards,
Don
If the early are the same as the '90 ,the lock plate (held on the column with a C clip) is what preloads the guts of the tilt mechanism.Take that out and the tilt falls apart.
Only way to remove pin is to dismantle top of column , so as to access the pin operated by the gear on the end of the key barrel , LH side.
Thanks for the replys. I am repacing the lock cyl. and I will take a look at the whole thing at that time. The reason I was asking is that the car is almost 20 years old and from time to time the link between the st wheel lock and the trany shifter is getting flakey. I realize the GM tried to do the thinking for us by designing the lock in the first place. I, for one, do not need the feature but I will probably just change the lock and forget about the wheel lock.
Thanks again
Don
