Default Time to mod, thoughts welcome

Getting ready to do some mods on my 88 L98. Here's what I have in mind, what do you think. Keep in mind, I'm not looking to get too
radical, just want a nice upgrade in performance, and retain some driveability. I just had 373 gears installed to go along with these other mods.

Miniram
GM fast burn heads
ZZ9 or ZZ409 cam. Thoughts please
Headers

I still have my 700R4 with stock converter.

Thanks

Bob

These are all probably worthwhile. How bout a catback exhaust system in place of the stock? Adds some HP and nice sound, and together with headers would be great.

Intake, heads, and cam is a nice place to start, especially with the gears you've got in place. You'll like being able to make power over 4500 rpm

With those mods, you'll need a different tune to get the most out of them. You can either do it yourself (with the proper equipment and know-how) or contact a tuner, some of which are supporting vendors on this forum. If you plan to have a tuner do it, I would STRONGLY advise talking to him/her before you purchase anything. He/she can help you select the best combination of parts for your particular car with respect to the tunes they've had success with. Hopefully that last sentence made sense. :o

Yep, sure did, thanks.

Getting the melrose exhaust system offered here on the forum.

2400-2600 stall TC, custom tune if not done already, and then the catback

You should be in the 350rwhp area. That ZZ409 cam loves to rev. That exact combo with my friends 89 car dynoed 375rwhp, and pulled right up to 7100 rpm. Keep in mind his heads flow around 300cfm.

An excellent tune is the key. Your car will preform night and day differenence. Just hope the bottom end holds up if its still stock. Like I said that ZZ409 will rev as far as your heads will let it.

I think the flow on the heads at .500 lift is 243 cfm. Also I have'nt made up my mind yet on the cam, may go with the ZZ9 cam, a little milder.

Bottom end is stock, but only has 50,000 miles on it.

Plan on having Jeremy Formato tune the car after I get it done.

Talk to me more about the TC. How does it relate to the ZZ9 or to the
ZZ409. Thats the thing that I'm really up in the air about. Don't know that much about that relationship. Thanks.

The TC acts like a clutch for the automatic, when it 'stalls' or locks, it sends all the power through the driveline. So if you want the best launch at the strip, you would want the stall to be right around 500rpm BELOW the torque peak of the engine.

A more precise determination would then be from your dyno results, which will depend on the cam choice. 409 will peak higher, and would warrant a higher stall than the ZZ9.

However, the reason I said 2400-2600rpm instead of something like 3000+(which would probably be best for a drag car) is because I believe that stalls above say 2600ish will drive you completely nuts on the road. The transmission will not feel the same, because it is actually slipping, and that wishy-washyness gets old fast. I dont think 2400-2600 would be terribly far off for a ZZ9 cam either, its pretty mild.
