Need a step-by-step procedure for weatherstrip replacement
I'm replacing the windshield/pillar weatherstrip and have searched the FAQ, C4 Tips and the Forum without a true report how this is done. Can anyone direct me to a procedure on doing this replacement? or at least tell me what you did to replace yours.
This is not for the impatient... if you don't have patience, or the time to take to do this, STOP and get somebody who can!
Get some 3M Release Agent (available at most body shop supply houses) to aid the removal (softens the glue). You'll also need some 3M Super Weatherstrip Adhesive (BLACK, not yellow!). A couple of popsicle sticks will aid you without causing damage to the weatherstrip during installation.
You'll have to pull the targa top and forward trim pieces (A-pillar and upper header panel) to facilitate the R&R of weatherstripping. Spray the release agent into the area where the weatherstrip is glued in (use a screwdriver to GENTLY pull up the weatherstripping to get the release agent spray tube underneath. Keep working as you go along to remove as much of the weatherstripping this way as you can (it saves time cleaning the retainers this way). Remove the old weatherstripping. Clean the retainers (channel where the weatherstripping goes). Install the new weatherstripping, using the popsicle stick to push the lip into the retainer channel. Use the weatherstrip adhesive SPARINGLY..just enough to keep it in place, not slopped all over everything.
Reassemble previously removed parts. That's it! It's not rocket science, but it does require attention to detail.
Robert: Thanks for the well written article. I wish I had read this before I attempted to replace some side stips on my removable top. I got the job done, but it took a lot of Bud Lites to get me through it!
