When car is off it goes through gears fine like normal. But when it is on and I push in the clutch(all the way to the floor) it has to be shoved into gear. Not everytime just most of the time. Do I just need to adjust my clutch or is it a bigger problem? Its a 95 vette
Definitely sounds like the clutch isn't completely disengaging. Has it been getting worse?
There's no adjustment on the clutch since it's a hydrolic linkage. Hopefully, a simple fluid flush / bleed will cure it. Chances are it still has 11 year old clutch fluid in it. Worst case, it could be a seal going bad in either the master or slave cylinder. If that's the case, you'll need to find the leak and replace the culprit.
Check your clutch master cylinder reservoir. It is underneath the ECM and brake booster on the firewall. If the level is down below the orifice at the bottom of the reservoir, then it is getting low. Also check under the car for brake fluid (that's what the hydraulic clutch uses for fluid) under the driver's floorpan or on that same side of the transmission. There will be a small stainless steel braided hose in this area, so check it for wetness or breaks/cracks where it curves around.
If everything checks out okay, now may be a good time to drain the tranny fluid, inspect it, and refill with new. Check tranny tailhousing, C-beam, and tunnel for leaking tranny fluid.
ok, so the clutch line isnt wet or doesnt appear to be leaking and I cant find any problems with the slave or master cylinder. But the fluid level is extrememly low. So anyway here is my problem, kinda embarressed to even post this but I unhooked the computer and got it outta the way and when I tried to take the cap off the resevoir to refill it I couldnt get it to budge. Is there a trick to it or is mine just stuck? gonna try something different tommorrow but I couldnt get it off with just my hands
I had the same problem checking mine recently, I finally got it off by putting on some leather gloves and making sure I rubbed the cap down good with a papertowel. I also removed the ECM mounting bracket in addition to the ECM.
Also check Bill B's site for a great write-up on clutch actuator cylinders, and how to diagnose if it's your master or slave cylinder (or both) acting up:
You can replace both the master and slave cylinders and get appropriate GM clutch fluid from Scoggin Dickey for less than $250.
About to do this myself on my 95. . .
A leak in the hydraulic line or air in the system will first result in a very soft pedal. I would start by changing the tranni fluid at the same time keeping an eye on the fluid level. If it drops you no doubt have a leak.
