Default '91 LCD display half missing?

OK, Parked my '91 up tonight- tuned engine off, flipped headlamps down then put parking lamps back on, locked car with anti theft on.
Came back within 5 mins, half the LCD display was missing. Fired her up-still the same WTF?

Display looks in bits, like half of the digits are missing. What caused this, and how can i get it back to normal?
Will re-boot ecm, clean up ground etc tomorrow,if no good i'll drop the column, pull the cluster and clean connectors.
If i drop the steering column will it affect the air bag in any way? (dumb question but i want to make sure before i go tearing in)

Any info appreciated, THANKS.

dropping the column is easy and won't effect the air bag in any way.

as for the display... is it just not visable, or is the 8 looking more like a 3 or a 1?

On my 92 I occasionally get this and in my case it is due to the plug in at the back of the IP being loose in the plastic it fits into.
I can get it back without dropping the column by :
1 Remove the black plastic dash panel. ( 4 plillips screws)
2. Remove the clear lens ( 6 thorx screws )
3. Remove 4 5/16 head screws that hold the IP in place
4. Shift the IP around a bit so that it seats better in the socket
5 Find the spot where the whole speedo readout lights up and hold the IP in that position while you tighten the 5/16 screws that hold the IP in place.
6. Reassemble clear lens and dash bezel.

hope this helps
