Default Help identifying Mem-Cal and MAF sensor.

Due to a recent engine fire on my 1987 coupe, I recently purchased a complete engine compartment wiring harness (including firewall plug and under-dash harness to ecm). It came with the MAF and ECM attached. Trouble is, the MAF sensor and Memcal don't look stock. First, the MAF has no brand names visable on it anywhere. Instead of the little ring with the wire filliment in it and the aluminum fined heat sink, This one has a green circuit board, edgeways, inside the tube. There is no screen on the outlet side and appears that there never has been. The inlet screen is much thicker than mt factory unit and has honey-comb shaped perforations. The only markings anywhere on the thing is the paten number 5,383,257.

The memcal has a bright orange label bearing "ADS Super-Chip". in smaller print, it says "1987 A.d.S.". Hand written, on a small paper tag stuck to one side is the number "8622 A". The ecm is a 7165, which is right for my car.

Is this stuff any good??

Was the MAF or Mem-Cal ruined during the fire?

The MAF sensor is probably a Wells unit. They are a frequency based sensor as oposed to the voltage based Bosch units the factory uses. There is circuitry in them to convert the frequency reading to a voltage signal for the ECM and they have a special circuit in them to simulate the burn off functiion so you won't get a code 36 from it.
I've heard mixed results from this MAF, but never having tried one for myself I can't speak from experiance....but then again, I've used some other Wells electronic equipment and won't ever do it again.
The MEMcal you have is an aftermarket ADS superchip...no idea on its application, so there is no way to tell if it'll work for you or not.

The MAF sensor was badly burned. The firewall was not breached so the memcal/ecm was not damaged. Mine is an 87 and I think all 89 and earlier Vetts had the ecm under the dash.

Thanks for the input Morley. I'm wondering if ADS is still around? Or Wells for that matter.

My Microtech MAF looks the exact same way. At one point, I wondered if it was the correct one. So far, my Vette runs ok with it.

Yes, Wells and ADS are still around. You'd be better off using your stock memcal, at least for now. try sending ADS an E mail and see if they can ID the chip from the numbers on it.
I wouldn't be surprised to find that the microtech and wells MAF's are the same unit.
