Default 12 second build up

OK so I have a 90 corvette 6 speed, first time i ran a 14.2 with a 2.3 60 ft. I want to run 12's by mid august with less then 3 grand spent. ialready ordered plugs/wires, air foil, air filter, AFPR, and LT1 exhaust with X-pipe. I have installed the airfoil and filter and actually noticed a substantially smoother acceleration rate, if it helped at the track I won't know until next week. What I want to know is if my goal can be achieved and the best way to get there. I was thinking TPIS long tubes, Drag Radials, AIR delete (its ugly), and either the FIRST intake, or runners and a base. This should be around the budget and I'm hoping will break that 12.99 mark. Sound good?

use the search item, and look at "jonecap". he is running 13.0@107 or so....you might need to copy his mods, plus get the heads worked on, or buy a set of aftermarket. his combo plus heads is a proven 12 sec combo. drag radials are a must.

I would go with the Vic'89 route, he got into the mid 12s with his setup.

Find him and IM him if he doesnt see this.

Yup. Vic'89 as well. Jonecap basically copy'ed his mods. Only major difference is Vic has an auto with a stall.

I think you're on the right track with the mods you've mentioned. I can tell you that to turn decent ETs on an L98 Corvette you have to get off the line well as they are dogs on the top end. I can't give you much advice as my car is an auto, so the mods I've done have been based on that. L98s take well to exhaust mods and this is where I saw my biggest gains so this is where I'd probably start.

I see you're in NJ..........you should try to make it to Etown for the next Corvette Challenge race (www.corvettechallenge.info). They'll be plenty of L98 guys there to talk to. As a matter of fact L98s have won 2 out of the first 3 events.

Work on lowering that 2.3 60' time. If you ran a 14.2 with a 2.3 60', you are very close to the high 13's already with a 2.0x 60', which your car should be very capable of as it stands already, even without DRs.

I have an LT1 the heads have never been off.. & its run 12.28 @ 112 mph

In Drag Racing ...you have to remember.. to get a GOOD ET.. you need a GOOD chassis set up.. To get GOOD MPH you need HP (Horse Power)

So basically what I'm saying is if yo are looking for a 12.xx ET dont worry TOO mush about HP improvements.. my car still has the stock exhaust manifolds & Cats... my only change is muffler eliminators..

For you to run 12s all you need is 3.42 gears (I'm assuming you are an L98 ... they have a LOT of LOW END POWER.. so use it .. get a good set of sticky tires..Yes the other mods will help.. but 1st you NEED traction..

My car is an auto so I know its a lot easier to launch.. but I have seen 6 speed car go 1.60s 60' time...

I removed my front sway bar.. (10 min job) it permits the front end to lift & put more weight on the rear when you launch.. & It really didn't affect the way my car handles on the street..

Also see if you can get a 160 thermostat.. & let it COOL.. before you get to the line.. If I run at 150 deg I'll run 2 tenths quicker than if I'm at 200...

Another thing is WEIGHT you can gain about 1 tenth for every 100 lb you remove..

I removed my mufflers (about 30 each =60 lb) also I used Weld Pro Star light weight wheels.. saves another 50-60 lb.. Ran with less than 1/2 tank of gas.. gas weighs 8 lb per gallon 10 gal = 80 LB remove your spare tire 40 more lb... you get my point.. a LOT of little things = a good ET...

Good luck..

PS why not come to Englishtown May 13th that day we are having a Corvette Challenge Race & myself ot 50 others can give you some tips...

Depending on temperature gas weighs around 6.2 - 6.35 pounds per gallon at aroune 72d F. Regular vs unleaded.
JP4 is around 6.8 pounds per gallon.
Water is around 8.3 pounds per gallon.

Not trying to attack, just set record straight.

Your prob right I was just taking a guess at the weight of gas.. so if it is 6.3 then I was a total of 17-18 lb off in my "guesstimate" so he will be a few lb off my figures... but I think I made my point about saving weight....

TA's, Vic's are excellant L98 examples, read what they have done. Understand, they both have quite a bit of time in tweaking those set-ups.
Etown is a fast track, worth a couple of tenths compared to most tracks. If you are going to get off, that's the place. (IMO, 3K is a tight budget)

The whole purpose of this is to see how fast I can go with the least amount of money. i'm keeping the budget fairly small to see if I can build a fast car for cheap. If I hit the 3k budget I will have less then 13K into my car and be able to keep up with some of the newer sports cars. that and my Crossfire isn't cheap to do stuff to, so its a never ending pit with that thing.

Best bang for the buck is nitrous... instant 12 second ETs!

That being said, from what you have so far, you're best to go with a good exhaust (LT1 setup is a good one if you've fabbed it to fit the L98), and I'd go with drag radials to hook it, along with the gears mentioned previously. 3.42/3.45 is the ratio I'd go with for best overall street manners and acceleration, and it's a perfect ratio for the L98's lowend torque. You don't necessarily need a torque converter yet, but it's a good idead nonetheless.

Good luck!
