Default instrument cluster

HELP !!! I just joined the Corvette ranks and I'm already lovin it. I got me an 84 with a 96 motor and I'm ready to get busy. My problem is the instrument panel, all the lights work and the gauges work except the tach and speedometer, also the writing on the fuse panel is faded so I,m looking for a diagram. Any help would be greatly appreciated

The tach is fed from the white filtered EST line. You need to tap that and feed it directly to the tach.

As for the speedo, I am not sure how to interface that VSS with your speedo...

The cluster has 4 lamps that back illuminate the instruments. If the lamps near the speedo and tach are not lit, then it appears they are not working. If all 4 lamps are lit, and the speedo/tach are not working then you need to determine if the cluster is getting signals from the speedo sender in the transmission and the tach signals from the distributor. If not, then the cluster circuit boards will need to be repaired. A schematic (but not for an 84) and other info on the cluster is available from www.batee.com

I was hoping it was just a fuse

If it was the LCD fuse or the clstr fuse, the entire cluster wouldn't work, not only the speedo and tach.

I'm gonna throw in my 2 cents on this one. Sounds like this could be a wiring nightmare once you get into it. It may be wise to buy two fsm manuals, one for each year. So we know the ecm was changed, how did they incorporate the dash wiring? My next question is, is the 84 and 96 fuse block the same or different?

The fuse blocks are different. If you've looked at both, you'd see that the newer one has a LOT more fuses in it. Also possible for the amp ratings to be different on fuses that would be found in both years.

Clarify this.

Do the tach and speedo read zero? Or do the numbers and bars not show up? Are they completely black, or just faint or faded out?

Defective IC on one of the circuit boards, or defective LCD pane.

I agree with qws. Since you have a 96 Engine in an 84, my guess is that the 96 ECM was used in place of the 84 ECM. I'll bet that the significantly differences with regards to inputs to the digital readout for the 96 versus that of the 84 is the root of your problem.

Since the 84 cluster LEDs light up, I'd guess that the person who installed the 96 ECM did not correctly connect the 84 digital cluster inputs for the tach and speedo to the 84 cluster. You need the wiring diagrams for the ECM and digital readouts for both the 84 and the 96.
