Default trans maint question

I have an 84 with auto trans. I didn't get any maintenance records or service history when I bought the car. It runs good, but to me it seems like the acceleration could be a little more positive. it seems to slip a little when accelerating, not so much off the line but when moving and you drop the accelerator. from the looks of the car and all that i've had to repair so far I don't believe the trans filter or fluid has been changed in a long while. The fluid does not smell burnt. I took it to a shop to have the fluid and filter changed, the mechanic there said I would possibly be creating more trouble by doing this. This sounded a bit odd to me, so I put it to you guys, does this make any sense?

Some guys believe in leaving a trans alone. I do not. I believe that fluid changes from time to time are nescessary. Some believe in total unit flushing, others drop pan only. My take on this is change the fluid. If trans fails soon after, it would have done so anyway. Make sure tv cable works freely and is adjusted correctly. This is the root of alot of 700r4 evils.
