This morning on start up...lots of noise from front of engine...turning noise, like bad bearings in something. Went away after about 5 minutes. Car is parked in a garage, so it wasn't unduly cold or anything. Alternator seems to be working just fine, as does the water pump. Air conditioner was off, in fact entire heater was "off". What do you guys think? Smog pump bearings? [IMG][/IMG]

Use a mechanic's stethoscope or a ratchet extension and place it on the housing of each component as close as possible to the bearing. If you using and extension, place it up to your ear. The component with the bad bearing should be readily audible.

does the sound go away when idle speeds up at all??
maybe the harmonic balancer?????
mine was god awful, and making clunking noises and grinding noises (sounded like bad bearings)

I have that same problem on my Vette, it sounds like the bearings inside the tensioner (it’s the part that’s on top that the belt goes around on the drivers side). If I had my shop manual here in the office I could tell U exactly what the part is.

Check the front exhaust Y pipe. They tend to break internally. The're comprised of 2 pipes: one inside the other. When the inside one cracks, and they usually crack near the header, they rattle like crazy inside the other pipe. Thing is, that you never see the break. If you brace the Y pipe, one 'leg' to the other 'leg' using 2 muffler clamps and a threaded rod the rattling goes away. Just tighten a moderate amount. What happens is; the geometry is slightly changed and the inside pipe gets pushed against the outside pipe. Maybe a long shot, but, if happens to be the culprit, you will chase down every other possibilty before even thinking this is it! Good luck!
