I bought new exterior weatherstripping and those foam door inserts and I was really happy to install both. I thought to myself "this shouldnt take too long, I can do it today!" The weatherstripping went off without a hitch, but those damn foam inserts are causing me problems. When its time to push the whole door assembly together, it puckers and doesnt sit correctly. What am I doing wrong? How do i fix this (probably) easy problem?
I don't know what year your car is, but those foam insulators are for the later door panels. I did install them on my 86 but I had to do a little triming in some areas.
I bought these inserts once (I do believe they are sound deadening items?) and ended up trashing them. Could not put the door panel on with these POSs. Didn't want to risk damaging the panel either forcing the issue.
I just put them in my 90. They were difficult. I used double sided tape to secure them. I messed around with the wiring a lot to make sure all the wires and connector were positioned as not to hold the door panel away from the door. I had the panels off and on a number of times to get things as close to just right as possible. I was able to get the driver side panel to seat with little force. The passanger side I had to use a little more force to get things seated. I don't think it took much more than without the insulator. Of course with all that work I can't really tell a difference.
I made my own with scrap automotive carpet and strips of masking tape. Took about 30 minutes on each side to make and about another 30 minutes per side to install. Less interior rattles for me.
