Default Transmission Cooler

I am going to put a vigilante converter on my '87. i was worried about the heat buildup. What type of transmission coolers are recommended? Will any type/brand suffice? Thanks

I put in a Hayden rated for 26000 gvw. It is not sufficient for road racing or lots of hard street driving. I now have the largest B&M cooler sitting on my work bench waiting to be installed. They don't rate it but it says, "for racing only" so it must be the one I want. You should consider putting in a temp guage to monitor your tranny temp. I have an Autometer unit. To mount the sender I got a B&M tranny fluid drain kit and mounted that in the tranny pan. The adapter for the temp sender threads right into that. It works slick. I hung the guage on the front lip of the dash in front of the left vent in the center console. With the Hayden unit I have now my temps go to about 240 aftetr several laps on a 3 mile road coarse, Brainerd Int. Raceway. The Hayden cooler is the one hanging in the back of the picture, waiting to be mounted. The B&M unit is a plate type cooler, similar to my oil cooler which you can see in this picture. I say, "get the biggest cooler possible!" Good luck.

I have a 9" Vigilante 2800 converter in my car, but I never road race with it.. I added a B&M small 18" x8 (approx) cooler in front of my power steering cooler.. it is running in tandem with the factory cooler..

My 96 has a trans temp gauge, & in heavy traffic my trans temp goes to 220.. & I'm babying it..

If I'm driving over 50 mph & the converter is locked my trans temp is 190 no matter how hot is outside..

When I drag race it its no prob because I has 20 min between rounds to let it cool...

Hay Tnt, how is the B&M cooler working for you. That's the one I just got and havn't put in yet. Do you have a temp guage on your tranny, what kind of temps do you see, do you road race??? Thanks.
