I'm having my tranny rebuilt on my 92 a4....I'm getting a pretty good deal I think....$550 for the rebuild including R&R. My question is that the guy wants to remove my tranny and replace it with one he already has built. Is this a good idea ? are there any differences in the corvette 700R4/4L60 than any another 700R4. I don't want to replace my tranny with a weaker one.
$550 to do a quality rebuild, with new torque converter, flushing of the cooler and labor to remove and replace is free. I spend more than that to do mine and I build my own. I recommend NOT swapping. There are dozens of differences that affect the "character" of your transmission. Replacing one from another vehicle would be "trading down"
Your seral number on your trans should match you build slip if you are keeping it stock, keep your trans.
The other case could have been over heated and warped the case ,may not have the correct clearences as your trans case.
$550.00 That is hard to believe.Has he ever removed a vett trans?:

$550 out the door but that doesn't include torque conv.; he said he doesn't change it as long as the fins are good. Should I have him change it regardless? new torque converter is an extra $80. And I will have him rebuild the tranny out of my car. Thanks for the info.

That's what he quoted me and he says he's done vette's before, I informed him that the exhaust pipes must come down to pull the tranny and the price didn't change; he gave me the best estimate around....estimates ranged from $550 to $1500. I'll go with $550!
Next ? are you just rebuilding the trans because of milage or is something wrong with it?
If no problem with trans I would just go with the new TQ converter.
I know just for the small parts kit and a couple of bands for me it was $250.00.I think for $80.00 he would most likely send out your trans and have it re done.

I'm glad you asked....the problem I'm having is that it won't shift out of first gear unless I let off the gas; I can't give it more than half throttle before it starts slipping and I don't have overdrive. The fluid is at the correct level and still red; I've tried adjusting the tv cable; no luck. Someone told me that it sounds like my bands have burned up. I'm just a shadetree mechanic so any other thoughts or suggestions are welcome.
Reluctant to shift out of first gear is typical of a sticky governor. Or more commonly, the governor gear "applecoring" Since this is easily checked without removing the trans, I would suggest inspecting it first.
That sounds to good to be true-ever heard that one B4? if it sounds to good to be true-it probably isn't!! $500. WOW, I'd want references. $1500. in my area.

Please excuse my ignorance pete....where can I find the governor and what does it look like? And how can I tell if it's bad....

The governor is located behind a 3 inch round cover, on the drivers side of the trans. Tap the cover off with a large screwdriver and a hammer. Then simply pull the covernor out. If the gear is chewed, it is available seperately. You do not have to buy a new governor. Also there is a valve in the center. Point the gear end straight up and squeeze the weights in and out. If the valve in the center moves freely up and down, and has at least .025 movement, it is likely good. A chewed gear or a sticky valve will cause the symptoms you describe.
This is just incredibly good info (even if I don't have an auto right now). Thanks guys.
I know I am glad to offer it. It is, and always has been , difficult to get solid tech info on automatic transmission. There are not alot of books on the subject, and people who do it for a living are reluctant to offer it up.
Most people are not up to diving in them because they are said to be so difficult to do. They are tough, but doable.
Also check the TV cable again ,Make sure the cable is so tight that you can play a tune on it,for proper adjustment. With info above you need to look at the drivers side of the trans. At the rear tail shaft area ,the round thing that covers the govener, will need to be removed. That is where the item you are looking for. When you get to that point I am sure someone on the CF can guide you through it.

Located in Tulsa, Ok...This guy seems reputable and very knowledgeable. He gives a 6 month unlimited mileage warranty, sounds like a pretty stand up guy to me. He's got a waiting list to get your tranny rebuilt. I'm going to give him a try, hopefully it's not too good to be true.
Pete K and REDC4CORVETTE, thanks for all the info you've given me on this matter....It's good to know there's always someone to turn to when we have problems with our vette's.
$550 is a good deal, and that's about what it SHOULD cost on any transmission of this type. Automatic transmissions on rear wheel drive (non 4x4) vehicles are actually very cheap and not near as difficult as most would think to rebuild. My father in-law and I just rebuilt the tranny on a dodge dakota r/t of mine, and it took about half a day (we didn't have to touch the o/d, it was fine), and it cost me about $250 including a new torque converter, and including paying my father-in-law $50 for his work. If he is charging you $550, he's making at least $250 or so in labor, and i'm sure if he's very good he can get in done in no more than a day. So that's $250 for him for a days work. It's UNREAL the markup some of these mechanics are charging for these rebuilds.

Rebuilding a 4 speed auto trans in 1/2 a day is quite an accomplishment. Hats off to you guys.
