Are the scratches on the inside or the outside of the window? There are anti-rattle pads on the inside. On the outside the only part that is supposed to come in contact is the seal at the top of the door. On my 87, one of the new outside seals had a ridge pushing through the contact pad, and it scratched the window. It took a while to find out what was doing it. If you take off the inside door panel and poke around with a flashlight, etc., you are bound to find your problem.

Yes, there are pads inside there. I had the same thing with my windows when I bought my car. I believe it's cause when the outer seal that runs the length of the window deteriorates and lets debris fall down though the crack. Eventually something (dirt or other) will wind up finding it's way onto those pads and work it's way between the window and the pad. Then every time you run your window up and down it's just like taking something sharp and running it up and down the glass.

I bought new glass and anything inside the door that would contact the new glass including the pads, inner and outer seals. Unless you're really mechanically inclined I'd get help from a pro or someone who has done the job before, it's tedious work. Not to mention if you get new glass you WILL have to re-align the windows.

Here's a list with part numbers for everything I bought, mine's a 96 though. I imagine a 94 is the same. The first two part numbers are for window guides that you will usually find broken if dorks close you doors by pushing on the glass.

10243037 Guide, Door Side Window Channel, Left Hand,(Driver Side), 1993-1996. GM Parts Direct

Thanks guys.......all this info. is great. I like working on my vette ( nothing major though ) so i am going to take off the the door panel and see what's going on in there. Is there any way to get the scratches out? I may have caught it at the beginning so the scratches arent very noticable yet.

Thanks again ,,,, Rick

Take some pictures of the process if you can! Sounds like you'll get to yours before I do.

Default Window Scratches

I had a similar problem with both windows on my '96. I pulled the door panel and found there is a plastic wire loom protector mounted at the outside rear view mirror that was rubbing just enough to scratch the glass over time. I was able to bend it out of the way, but figured it would only become a problem again later on, so I found some sheet foam at the craft store (my daughter's closet) about 1/8 inch thick that has adhesive on the back, cut to fit, done.

Use 00 steel wool and some rubbing compound to get scratches out of glass. DO NOT use it on your mirrors.

I'd think the trim line does it. The rivets that hold it in place scratch it up.
