Default can't read timing mark

Went to check timing on my 86 just to find the timing # on the cover can't be made out. A pic would be great, but I'll take any other info on how to know were T.D.C. is. I tried steel wool but that did not work. Dave

I done have a pic (maybe somebody will post) but the timing should be at 6* BTDC. Look at the teeth and gage for the middle, it will be over to the right (passenger side) about one tooth. Or until the car idles good and maybe more like 8* which is about 1/2 tooth over. IMO

There are several ways to do it actually. The cheapest and easiest that comes to mind is to pull the drivers side valve cover off and watch the valves on no. 1 cylinder. Have sombody turn the engine with a breaker bar or get a remote starter, disable the ignition and bump the starter. When the intake valve just closes, you're in the ball park. Another cheap an easy way, maybe even more so than the first way I described, is to get an adjustable timing light and set it to zero and back off the timing until the light starts to strobe. There are many ways to do it, any small-block chevy rebuild book will have a procedure.

Hope I've helped,

Adam.

If your timing gun is an inductive timing gun, just set the desired timing degrees on the **** of the timing gun, and then line up the mark onto the deep groove of the timing tab. The deep notch is zero.

The deepest V is 0 degrees. Going towards the passenger side, the peaks are 4 btdc, 8 btdc, 12 btdc.

Your mark should be between the 1st and 2nd peak left of the deep V
