I read that SOMETIMES you can solve an idle problem by disconnecting the battery and reconnecting. It lets the computer relearn the idle? OK, I don't know ****. My friend said I need to drive the car, the computer will fix the idle.
My other friend said, wait for a full moon, ***** your finger.....
OK, guys, I am sorry, I just don't know squat about the tuned port injection. What can I check and clean myself? Mama ain't working now, so it is NOT going to the shop for a while.
Thanks again for your help and insight into the unknown
What year car, and describe the symptoms please. It could be as simple as a vacuum leak or it could be a messed up idle air control valve, but either way we'll have to know the symptoms to even begin diagnosing it.
The idle speed is programmed (burned) into your prom. It isn't subject to "relearning". The ECM manipulates the IAC valve to adjust the idle speed for the conditions the prom "sees" via the other sensors. You can start by cleaning the IAC passages in the TB and the IAC valve, itself. Although it isn't cheap, the FSM (Factory Service Manual) can help save you a fortune.
when I turn the key, it fires and quits, but I end up holding the peddle in to start it, then it will run smoothly, but release the peddle and it will quit.
Car is a 1986 C4, Auto, iron head. Many, Many, Many taped wires.
But when it runs with the peddle depressed, it runs well.
TB is throttle body? Tell me what to clean, I am off to get the service manual.
Is the Service Engine Soon light on? If so there is a code(s) stored in the ECM. You can access the code by using a paper clip and making a U with it. Then insert it into the ALDL under the drivers dash. It is pin A and B, the two upper right pins next to each other. With the key turned on, insert the paperclip and the SES light will flash a code 12.. one flash -pause- two flashes and will repeat x 3. Then the next set of flashes wil be the code (ex. three flashes- pause- two flashes x 3 is code 32). This will be the first step in solving the problem. If the SES light is not own, then as CFI-EFI stated you might want to clean the IAC (idle air control located on bottom of TB) and TB (throttle body) along with setting minimal idle and TPS. There are posts on the steps to take for these procedures. Get back with more info.

Had the exact problem this week in my 87. Pulled the ecm fuse out for 30 secs and the problem cleared for me. (service engine light never came on while i had the idle problem)
Was the car running or not at the time? did you have the ignition on or off? Thanks.
Marc
Ignition off car not running. You can pull the ECM fuse out or disconnect the battery for the 30 sec or 1 min. This clears the ECM's memory which can store 50 engine starts. Doing this will erase the memory and the ECM will have to learn from what the engine and sensors are doing now. If a real problem exist, the Service Engine Soon light will appear again. Once you fix the problem the code will still show until you start the engine 50 times or disconnect the battery (or pull fuse). Try using the paperclip and see what you come up with.. it will be easier to help!
