sometimes the vette starts right away very fast and sometimes the vette takes a good 5-6 seconds... and I think it happens only when it takes that long but a cloud of smoke gets out the exhaust.
When it starts right away, I doesn't seem to do so.
doesn't matter hot or cold. I never know if it's gonna do it or not.
It starts in a fraction of a sec really strongly or it takes 5-6 secs and emits a puff of smoke
Well what color is the smoke and what does it smell like? Burnt oil, coolant, unburnt fuel? And have you checked fuel pressure? Perhaps the fuel pump relay is on its way out causing longer than usual starts due to oil pressure having to build.

this maybe the prob. i replaced my FP relay a few weeks ago and it still starts either right up or a few sec's later, but the FP relay may be the cause. do you know how to test the relay? .... look into that.

The fuel relay harness is testable. You can use a jumper wire on terminal A and E first and last wires) on the harness (red and orange on my 86) and see if the pump gets primed. The ecm will only prime it for about 2 sec. This gives power to the fuse then the pump. The engine should start without the relay just takes longer crank for the oil pressure to reach 4 psi. The oil pressure switch is a back up in case the relay fails so you don't get stranded. Use a test light on the FP fuse and turn the ignition on and the tester should light up for 2 sec. If it does then the relay is good.If the relay is good it should relay a charge to the fuel pump. When you turn the key on and hear the pump prime for 2 sec then the relay is good.
