I am getting a code 36 everytime I start the car. I know that I should use the search feature, and I do have my fsm handy. I was hoping that you guys could share some info on what caused this code for you. Could help me speed up the diagnostic time if I were better focused. I swapped out the relays because I have 2 know good ones on the shelf. Any input would be appreciated. 87 auto car.
Did you take a look inside the MAF and see if it glows when the car turns off? Have someone start the car, while you peek inside the maf and see if it lights up when its turned off.Thats one way I remember seeing if the wire is still lighting off or unless it broke, youll need a MAF if the relays and wiring is good.
Its either the relays, the wiring, or the MAF itself, 99% of the time.
ECM is the VERY last resort.
Because I was too lazy to troubleshoot down the tree, I swapped both relays for know good ones. Swapped in my other 2 known good maf sensors and took a quick, close look at the wiring connectors at each . It looks good at least. Looks like I gotta dive in and do it by the book. I did try to power up the fuel pump relay by putting 12 volts(through a test light) and the pump did not energize. It is late, and I am tired. I may have to run 12 volts through a fused wire instead of through the test light bulb. Time for another beer.
Followed the flow charts and it led to the ecm being bad. Just before I bought a new one, I swapped out the relay with a new one my friend had on the shelf. Fixed it. Looks like my know good relay was bad. Problem solved for 8 bucks and 1 hr labor. Tossed in my new chip (thanks Jesse) and it is purring like a kitten.
