My '96 LT4 wont start. It has 83k on it and runs great. The opti spark was changed maybe 5k ago along with the plugs. I've noticed on occasion that upon start up, the idle was really rough and just about died. But that was just an every once in a while deal and it didn't continue after driving. From what I've read in other posts in the past, it sounds like it may be the opti. What do you think.

Could be... Sure has the same symptoms mine did just before my Opti went at 55k. Question: Did you replace the waterpump at that time, as well? If not, that could be the culprit and the Opti is just the unfortunate innocent bystander. When the WP goes, it begins to leak coolant onto the Opti - I'm sure you can guess what happens next.
I had it in with a good Vet mechanic. If I recall correctly he said the pump looked fine and just replaced the opti.
Do me a favor...go out to the car, pop the hood, and look at the underside of the hood. Let me know if you've got a "stripe" (horizontally) across the underside of the hood that corresponds with the location of the serpentine belt.
No stripe. I assume I was looking for water begin thrown off the belt, but it didn't have that. Do you think a code should be appearing on the ODBII? Do I have to go through a sequence of commands to get the codes to come up or should they automatically appear when problems occur?
Is the Service Engine Soon light illuminated? If yes, what are the codes?
Does it crank?
Does it try to start at all?
What's the fuel pressure?
After the fuel pump stops running, does the fuel pressure hold or immediately bleed down?
Pull the #2 plug and check for spark. Is there any?

Yes...coolant flung off the belt give the "stripe." Just keep it in mind for the future if you ever do suspect your WP is going. You'll be able to feel it, as well, because along with your car starting to run hotter, the coolant dripping onto the belt will cause the power steering pulley to slip - you'll definitely notice that at low speeds around town.

You have to use a scanner, scan software on a laptop, or take it to someone in order to get PCM OBD II codes from a '96.
The service engine soon light was on but no codes. I thought it was on because the ignition is on. You know how some stay on to do a diagnostic during start up. I thought that was the reason. It cranks hard but no attempt to catch and start. I'll check the fuel pressure and get back to you.
Mine just started acting up this morning with hard starting. Pull the vacuum line off the fuel pressure regulator and see if gas comes out from there. That's what mine is doing so it's off to the parts store for a new one. Seeya, Robert
There is a brake pressue light on the instrument panel but I didn't see a fuel pressure light. I live in an apartment and don't have tools or the space unfortunately to check the plug or the pressure. It sounds like I have to have it towed to a dealer for the code scanning.
Try one thing before you call for a tow. Crank it and while it's cranking floor the gas pedal and see if it will start. If it does then I think that you will find it to be the FPR.
