Default nos tpi plate system

Anyone running the NOS tpi plate system on an L98? What mods. to the fuel system and timming need to be done. I have a hypertech chip in it, installed by the former owner. Will this provide to much advance at W.O.T. Don't know if it's a stage 1 or 2. E-mailed the #'s to hypertech they said it was to old to cross refrence. Thanks for the help.

Pull it out, or get a timing retard. NOS specifically recommends NOT using an aftermarket chip without a timing retard. You'll want to pull out 2 degrees with a 100 shot (leave it alone with a stock chip).

Thanks for your help.Pull out 2 degrees of base timming or advance? Also, can that hypertech chip be custom programed to suit my needs or should I try to get a stock one from GM?

If you get a timing retard, and continue to use your chip, "at least" pull out the regular recomended 2 degree's per 50 HP nitrous increase to begin with (so 4 degrees pulled for your 100 shot)...Even pull 6 degrees to be on the safe side since your chip "could" be bringing your timing well over 40 degrees total.......you can always take a degree or so (less) out after you inspect the plugs and get it running we'll .... No harm in playing it safe

I run that system on my 91. I have run my Jet stage II chip with no problems. I spray a 150 shot and pull anywhere from 6 to 9 degrees out while on the bottle depending on how thick the air is. My base timing is bumped to 12*. Fuel pressure plays a huge roll on the result of your tune. I run about 44# at the rail. I have run this setup for 3 years with no problems. Always run the best gas you can.

Thanks repoman, I plan on adding an edelbrock in tank pump, adjustable fuel presure reg., a mallory hyfire 6 ( it has a single stage retard), and 2 heat range cooler plugs to start with before adding the spray. Can you change the plate system to a single nozzel system and run it on a different car? Also can you increase the HP of the plate system with bigger fuel and NOS jets, without changing to bigger solenoids?

You might find a plate made for a single butterfly throttle body. If so you can go that route. You will have to change the jets if you go single to get the same effect (HP). Some have put a single nozzle in the up pipe between the air filter and the throttle body. You could use this setup on about anything and spray it wet or dry. I have heard of problems of freezing the blade open this way, but never seen it in person. If you go this route and spray it wet you whould want to put the nozzle as close to the front of the throttle body as possible. If not a pooling effect of raw fuel can happen and the result whould be a engine fire. Most everyone that goes this route sprays dry.

As far as the HP increase.. If it is the off the shelf system made by NOS for the tpi then you are about at the limits of the solenoids. You whould have to step up to larger solenoids to get more then 150 out of it. 150 is more then enough to spray on a stocker. Anymore then that its a crap shoot on the pistons. I have seen it done with 200 but only a few races. Im going to build a new motor this winter so the last race of the season Im going to spray 250 in two stages to mine just to see what happens LMAO! She will run like hell or loose a motor. Either way its going to be interesting.

Hope this helps.

That does help alot. The more info I have, the more reliable motor frendliy system I can build. The only change to my plan,I'm going to make is an MSD 6A, box, and Msd start/retard box instead of the mallory.Other wise a new edelbrock in tank pump, adjustable fuel presure reg. and Nos tpi 150 plate system is the way to go for my mainly street '86.

You'll need a 6AL or a 6T, as the 6A has no provision for rev limiters or accessories...it's a basic ignition system. You'll also want a window switch if you're using a full throttle switch to activate the solenoids (recommended).

Good luck!

It turns the N2O on and off at set RPM's. You don't want to be spraying when the engine bogs or be spraying if you hit the rev limiter, they're around 89 bucks from Summit.

I've got a 91 coupe with NOS. Lingenfelter superram plenum & manifold, 58mm throttle body, long tube headers, and Borla exhaust. The car loves the NOS! oh yeah buy extra tires!!
