Default Hypertech Chis vs. Tuning

Is it better to buy a hypertech chip or to get a custom tuned one? I have a 91 that I am looking at puting a new chip in.

Custom tune is the way to go, specifically from one of the supporting vendors on this forum.

That is what I figured but I thought I would ask the question.

tuned for what?

you'll probbaly get 15chp from a (better) custom chip without mods.

with any mods appreciably affecting air/fuel (intake, headers on exhaust, cam, heads) and having speed density, the a custom tune is not only desireable but mandatory; you would absolutely need extensive changes in fueling and timing at different points throughout the rpms band, and particularly so during partial throttle, meaning anything under about 80% throttle (which is where most of normal driving occurs)

i strongly recommend alvin anderson, www.pcmforless.com, our supporting tuner on this forum. he's $100 less expensive than the next guy, much less expensive than some of the companies out there, does superb work, is fast and his customer service is second to none. all of this i can put my word on the line for.

You get what you pay for.

Get a dyno tune if you are going to get tuned. A mail-order chip is a waste of money in my experience/opinion.

How about TJWong, or I've even heard some good feed back about ski_down_it.

Get a wideband and put it on the rollers so you can gauge your progress anything else and you are shooting in the dark IMHO.

Good luck to ya, Tom

I think you should just buy the Hypertech chip. Speaking of which, I just happen to have one lying around.
