Blocked Gas Tank Vent System
I have been suspecting that the tank venting system on my 86 is getting progressively more restricted, because the vapors that escape from the tank when the cap is loosened are have gotten more violent. Last weekend, I kept smelling gas whenever I stopped, so I opened the gas cap and got almost an explosive venting of pressure. I did this while the engine was idling, and to my surprize , the engine quit when I vented the tank. It restarted ok, but the point is that it time to fix this as I have been warned!
Can anyone suggest the best way to go about fixing this. I have the service manual, but thought if someone else has fixed this , they could offer some suggestions. I have read that the line that goes from the tank to the vapor canister is prone to blockage due to rust. Can it be unblocked or is it best to replace. Any help is appreciated as I plan to tackle it this weekend.
