He's changed the plugs, cap, wires and fuel cap so far. He didn't get the old O2 sensor out in time before his appointment so that has yet to be done. The brake booster is good (holds vac.) but he'll keep looking at the lines.

Actual results:
On dyno 1228 rpm
HC - Limit: 58 - Read: 143
CO - Limit:0.32 - Read: 2.61
NO - Limit: 652 - Read: 106

Idle - 688rpm
HC - Limit: 200 - Read: 238
Co - Limit: 1.00 - Read: 4.54

Red - where did you get the seafoam???

Thanks again for the help!

I looked at the ECM to see if I could tell if it's been out and chipped but I don't see any evidence that it's been out of the car. Will a chipped car pass? What am I missing?

HELP!!

What are the readings? Is it a Tailpipe test (2 Speed Idle) or a Transient test (on a dyne)??If dyne, at what speed? What are the readings? HC, CO, CO2, O2, Nox?

Look up...

the test takes place on a dyno..one reading at 1228 rpm which is probably 50kmh (just guessing) and the other is at idle 688 rpm...

Looking rich. WAS IT FULLY WARMED UP? Check for fuel control related codes. (Like CTS,IAT,MAF,MAP, O2, or TPS codes) Are the O2s slow? A graphing meter will show a slow frequency. Is there a mouse nest in the air filter?

Quick & Dirty: Run a can of SeaFoam or Chevron Techron through it. Get some good highway runs to burn the carbon out. Replace both O2s, they are likely crudded up & slow.

Do you have access to a 5 gas analyzer? It would be nice to check your progress.

I haven't got any codes showing...we just put a can of "gauranteed to pass" in the tank. The car was hot when he got there..no mouse nest lol (new K&N). There is only one o2 and it is getting replaced..I suspect it to be the biggest issue.

I have no access to a logger, scanner, or 5 gas analyzer.....

You are running rich by looking at those numbers. Very low NOx amounts. Have you checked the plugs and timing/distributor. Mine was running rough and it turned out to be the distributor. Plugs/timing for the rich running.

Because it was in being tested ,I had the shop do the Seafoam and I'm not sure were they got it from. I would expect that anyone licensed to do the "Drive Clean" testing should be able to get it.
The Garage that did my testing was Flash Automotive in Whitby.

did u disconnect the sensor like i told you that brings the timing down to 0? maybe on my days off, i will visit your place. i have LT's headers/high flow cat, and flowmaster's. there is no reason why you should fail.

for best reusults the cats have to be hot!

No...he didn't do the timing...but he's doing that right now. I think he wanted to see how close it was in normal running condition before he had to "make" it pass. I think there are enough little tricks to do that it will pass next time. He did have the car hot...but I told him he should have let me take it. I think I can get them hotter .

Move up north, no e'mission test here yet!!!

I thought there was a max $ you must spend on your car until you pass the test or reach the max $, if you spend over that you are good until the next go around in two years? Is this not true, or is the max $ high and you have not reached that yet?

LOL, I live just outside of North Bay. We have no emission tests here, good thing, as most of my vehicles I have owned in the past would not pass any test.

You should find out where the boundry is for the emission test and tell your old man to move right there

As for the Vette season being to short, try finding a mechanic up here who can do the work. First time at Napa here in North Bay I was looking for some "vette" parts, the guy behind the counter was like
"Vetete What? Boy,,, Your in 1/2 ton country here"

GAWD I love the north!!!!

I had the same issue with my 87 not being able to pass the Ontario Drive Clean test. I replaced the O2 sensor and the car seems to be running a bit better. You may want to do this. When I removed the old sensor it was totally black! I won't know if this will help me to pass but you may want to try it since its easy to do and it was only $40 CDN for the new sensor. I figure it doesn't hurt to replace the part especially given the condition of the sensor once I removed it.

Well, we did a full tune up, new o2, checked all the vacuum lines and unplugged the sensor on the distributor...and IT PASSED!!!!!! AND..it did so with flying colours!

Thanks to everyone for the advice..I really think the unplugged sensor trick is the one that did it but I'm sure it needed the tune-up regardless.

glad it passed, mine passed last year in Georgia with cam/heads/headers barely though, i did 2 things 1> pull timing to 4, 2>went to station when it was waaayy too hot.

What sensor at distribution r u taking about.
