I have recently aquired a 1986 stock corvette, vin#1G1YY0780G51078, coupe. I am deployed with the navy and the car is in storage. Any help decifering wether it is base, l98, alum heads, etc would be appreciated. Also, I would like to make some performance upgrades, nothing to exotic, just help it breathe better and give it a little boost. Any ideals?
Stock it's an L-98. There were some 86's with aluminum heads and some with cast, the aluminums are rated at 5 more HP I think. Im sure someone will chime in, but am I wrong when I say that the verts got the aluminum heads, or was it just an 86E vs. 86 late thing?
Everyone says that an exhaust is the best immediate upgrade, and I agree. My car came with a flowmaster cat back presumably to replace the restrictive stock mufflers. I put a set of Hookers on this winter, and it is definitely an improvement.
Intake system would be next, something which I will go after this coming winter.

Thanks for what you do, and welcome!
Yes, the 86 vettes had cast iron heads and aluminum heads (early and late model). I have a 86E with cast iron and the aluminum were rated at 5 hp more. All 86 verts were aluminum. As champs85 stated the exhaust system will give the biggest improvement.
Dont bother with the "fast-pack", This is a kit that has an airfoil/sparkplug wires/adj. fuel pressure regulator/ airfilter and other minor stuff. If you plan to improve intake/exhaust system, then get the AFPRegulator though. On my '89, a catback system (high flow mufflers, and Y pipe), underdrive pulleys, cleaning the throttle body, making sure there are no vacuum leaks, and a fresh set of fuel injectors really woke the engine up. Seat of the pants verification man.
Good luck on your new hobby....Sanche
thanks for the tip, I was just looking over the "fast-pack", and it seemed a littly pricy as well. As for the fuel injector's would stock be prefered, or maybe boost em up a little, as well as a larger t/b?
There are lots of threads on the subject of injectors. The bottom line is, don't go to a higher flow rate unless your thinking of doing major engine mods (increase displacement, super/turbocharging.....). I replaced mine w/stock ones because of rough idling and a slight loss of power. Four of mine were bad.
They are easy to check w/ a digital ohmeter, and should be no less than 14 ohms (hot). Since it will take a few days to do the job right (highly recommend getting a svc. manual), its best to replace all 8 at once so you don't have to go thru it again if one of the others go.
The level of difficulty I would say is 5 (10 being very difficult/special tools/knowledge).The toughest part of the job was removing the bottom torx bolts that secure the intake plenum tubes to the manifold (don't strip the torx head) .
I paid $260.00 for (8). They were new, from highly recommended source.
Look up FIVE O Motorsports out of Calif.
