Default My new 383 stroker

I just got my 383 stroker I know I will have a lot of questions as I prepare to put it in. My first question is: The harmonic balancer is marked with gaduations from 0 to 60 with a pointer attached to timing chain cover. I assume that this is 0 to 60 degrees and at top dead center the pointer should be at 6 degrees am I correct? There are no numbers from 0 to the opposite direction so how would you know how far it is retarded or is that at all necessary. 90 L98 Auto 383 stroker. I will post pictures tommorrow.

I dont think you'll ever need any marks that far back. All your timing will be advanced from TDC

Put the balancer at 0.
The 6* you will dial in later with the distributor.
Double check that piston #1 is at TDC by looking down the spark plug hole(heads are on right?). You should be able to see it right there very close.

To set it at TDC the headers are off so I stuck my finger in hole and felt when the valve opened and went 180* from there. Is this right.

No, look down the spark plug hole. You could also insert something in there to feel if the piston top is right there.
The cam turns at half the speed the crank does and then the valve spring takes some degrees of rotation to open the valve.....so that would not be the way to check piston location.
Your #6 piston should be near TDC if your #1 is at TDC.
