The Gm dealer working on my car says I need a new MAF and the driver solenoid? I know what the MAF is but is the "driver solenoid" the same thing as the power and burn off relays? I need to know because the price difference between having the dealer do it and doing it myself with parts from Mid America is over $700.00
Re: Need help with Mass air flow sensor (rbvette1)
rbvette1,
what's wrong? what are your symptoms?
many MAF maladies and error codes can be cured by either fiddling with or replacing the MAF relay(s) alone.
your's is an 87 correct, i'm not sure if there's one or two relays involved for your year. my '89's circuit uses two relays behind the battery on the firwall. very very common.
hang on to the 7 big ones until you get more opinions
Re: Need help with Mass air flow sensor (rbvette1)
I replaced both MAF relays (power and burn-off) for $17 and 20 minutes of my time. Boy did that make a difference in starting and in mileage. Start there and work up in expense and time.
Re: Need help with Mass air flow sensor (drive it)
I do have two relays on the firewall behind the battery, Thanks now that I know where thao solenoids are I can deal with them, But first I will replace the MAF sensor and the relays first. Does anyone know where I could purchase a driver solenoid and how to replace if necessary. -----Thanks, Randy
Re: Need help with Mass air flow sensor (rbvette1)
As noted in an earlier reply, the driver solenoids are part of the ECM. They provide the ground to energize the MAF Relays. In other words, if they're bad, you need a new ECM and replacing the Relays and/or MAF isn't going to do you any good because the MAF isn't going to work without any power from the Relay. Ask the dealer how he determined the driver was bad (it should have been picked up on a scan and he should have also verified that the wiring from the Relays to the ECM was good)
