I had a 15 Lb FW and we/Ol'RJ could not tune out a slight studder that would oocur at the same RPM, every time when slowly going up thru the RPM range..

I put the heavier 30 lb FW in and the studder went away, we found this out accidentallyy, but realized it after the studder went away.

interesting

Some good info Josh
I wonder if it's because they weigh more.

I think the higher rpm will put the crank resonance beyond the rattling frequency of the drivetrain.

It also creates a bit more drag on the bearings in the tranny, that may help.

Vintage.

the black tag was the original, 1989-1993E. Made in West Germany by ZF.

Blue tag, made in Alabama, came on line in mid-1993, through 1996.

The difference with the blue tag is the lower gears are not as straight cut. Also, the torque rating dropped from 450 to 400.

The result is that the blue tag is that it's quieter...

All ZFs use the DM.

Remember, the DM is also the external balance for the engine.

Good article. Thanks for posting.

Very happy with the SM Camaro Flywheel and Mcleod stage 4 ( Bronze Pucks) clutch in my 396 LT1. Been driving on the street and to the track for six years with this set up. The Camaro flywheel weighs 22 LBS so its about 18 LBS less than the DM. It is cast steel. When balanced properly it is not much louder than the DM in normal driving. Yes, it is noisy with the clutch out in neutral. Setting my idle at 1000 RPM's did minimize the noise.

With the Power Effects exhaust open, headers and off road pipes on, the SM flywheel noise is not even an issue.
