Default Help in buying a mini starter.

which one?. i need to buy mini starter b/c flexplate is 168t already installed 383 engine and transmission but discovered my 85 big heavy starter will hit flexplate. Also staggered or in line ?. thinking of powermaster pwm-9500 or pwm-9526 staggered style or NAL-12361146
or pwm-9426 staggered style NAL-9000852 or at summitracing.com.

Iam inclining towards staggered style.

thanks in advance

Sami,
Most aftermarket starters (mini) come with dual bolt patterns drilled in the billet mounting block. This allows it be be used on the 153 or the 168 tooth units.

Well picked up 2 diff mini starters one is "staggered style" n another "inline" style for a 168 tooth flexplate, first i test fitted still a hairline gap between starter n flexplate waaayyy too close cant take any chances so, i returned the mini starters but instead picked up a new 153T flexplate externally balanced, for a 1 piece rear main seal, this should allow me to resuse my 85 original starter without any problem. So at the end 168 T flexplate cant be use on our vettes. 153t flexplate is the way to go no matter u use mini starter or big full size stater.

Hope u enjoyed ur vacation.

From GM Site:

12361146 High-Torque Mini-Starter
This high performance gear reduction is designed for 1958-96 Chevrolet V8 and all V6 90º engines (200, 229, and 4.3L). Its compact starter delivers plenty of torque and it is a small package which offers increased clearance for extended oil pans and headers exhaust systems. This lightweight (10.5 pound) and powerful (1.2 kilowatt ouput) starter relies on a 3.75:1 gear reduction to spin a high-compression engine. This mini starter has a red Chevrolet Bow Tie logo and a dual bolt pattern for 12 3/4" (153 tooth) and 14" (168 tooth) flywheel. Mounting bolts and shims, gaskets and electrical connectors are included.

Technical Notes: This unit can be rotated to clear most exhaust systems. This starter is not recommended for competition.

(There are also similar units at Summit or your local performance parts supplier)

Sami,
aftermarket products seldom fit properly. They fight you every step of the way sometines. If it is not too late, you may want to try another mini starter. Vacation was bitchen! Wife brought home real estate books and is talking about moving.

Summit sells a very good mini starter-gear reduction metal planatary gears around $150 works great on my 355 168 straight bolt & my 434 168 stagger bolt with 12.8 compression. The GM mini starter has plastic planitary gears in lasted starting motor 3 times before the gears stripped. The Summit starter weighs about 8lbs & is 1/3 the size of standard starter. It comes with instructions & shims showing how to measure gear depth on starter gear into flywheel makes installing easy, no header removal & all wires fit without modifying
