I have a 92 (LT-1) Auto with 128k miles on it. This question is probably one I should know the answer to but I don't. I have hard starts when I first start the car or if I have been driving it then let it cool off. It is garage kept and my garage has a very strong smell of fuel. Its not leaking any fuel under the hood or from the tank. I also have a slight "miss" when idling - not a bad one but noticible because it shakes slightly. Sometimes the miss is worse than other times. Could these be related? Can leaking injectors cause the smell and miss or one or the other? I don't know much of anything about cars but would love some input from anyone out there willing to help. I have used the search function to the best of my ability and I either get too broad a spectrum of results or I get "no" results. Also, I know you can bend a paperclip and read codes but I don't know exactly which pins to short to get them and how the pins are numbered. If anybody can explain this to me I would be very appreciative of it. TIA!
It could be your fuel injectors leaking. Mine did similar things when they were leaking. It could also be fuel pressure related so you'll have to check the fuel pressure to determine. There are a couple of similar issues being discussed on the board currently.
The slight miss at idle may just be the nature of the early LT1 engines. They have batch fuel injection so that causes a more rough idle then the later LT1s.
Check fuel pressure via fuel pressure gage. Note pressure with key on, when idling, tape it to your windshield and note pressures while driving in various rpm range, and note pressure immediately when the engine is off (watch for sudden drop). This would be where I would start. A fuel pressure gage can be had at just about any autoparts store. A raw gas smell is usually a leak in the system or a loose gas cap. Where do you notice the smell coming from?
