i have seen some spots on the ground.. its not red but its not motor oil"i dont belive" i know trans fuild is red but does a 4 speed have trans fluid? if so where can you see if it has enough? thanks...
steve
p.s. could it be the a/c leaking?
This tranny has an overdrive unit behind the 4 speed and it has auto-tranny fluid in it. The fluid needs to be changed every 30k miles ( I do mine every other season) or your asking for Big Trouble $$$
so if it was that it would be by the pan not the block and trans meet up? right? cause the leak or what ever it is was where the block and transmisson are bolted together.. i ran the car seating still for 20 min and nothing came out anywhere.. but the trans was not in gear it was in "N" would this make a diffance?
steven
Three possiblilites. Clutch slave cylinder uses brake fluid, 4speed uses 80-90W gear oil, and OD section uses Dexron III. It could be any of those, of course, it could also be an oil leak at the back of the engine. I'd spray the underside down with brake cleaner and see if you can tell where the drips are coming from. Even thought the manual suggests 30k fluid changes, I wouldn't let it go that long. I'd do every 10k miles like the aftermarket suggests.
Ok so you say it looks like it is leaking from the side where the two meet together?
Engine oil is engine oil, THe 4 speed uses 80-90 wt and The overdrive unit uses automatic trans fluid, it is like an automatic trany it has lines that fun to the front of the car to the cooler The lines could be leaking? or the gasket between the pan and the overdrive could be leaking?? Your best bet would be to get under there and really find the problem if the overdrive is going that could mean big bucks I hade my 87 fixed at a dealer when I could get it out if reverse and It cost me $1,500 and the only reason I went to a dealer is because I was on a road trip!!
I have torn my transmision apart before and its A job.
But Id crawl under there and inspect real good first. :yesnod:
