how hard is it to do your self? i think i found it... the leak is near the head and valve cover some oil is there, im thinking that is where it is... in my mustang i had to take off the intake to get to the valve covers it does look i would have to on this one... but for someone that has done this them self that mostly has a speed shop do all the work for me how hard is it to try to do myself?
I have heard that on my '88 the tough part is getting the EGR tube that runs over the right valve cover is a P I T A. I have also heard that if you remove the wiper motor on the left it really helps.
Less than 2 minutes on an 85 is a bit of a stretch.
It's not too bad though. You need to remove the black plastic injector harness/EGR tube covers on both sides so you can get to the top valve cover bolts. The passenger side is pretty straight forward after that. The manual tells you to pull the A.I.R. pump and bracket to get the driver's side out. Instead of that, just remove the windshield wiper motor cover (held on by 3 srews) just over the valve cover. It'll give you just enough room to pull the cover up and off without too much hassle.
Just finished mine on the same engine you've got, iron-head L98. The only real gotcha is the EGR pipe on the passenger side. Be careful to take out the two bolts at the top and then just twist it out of the way. DO NOT SCREW UP THE CLAMP. Everything else is just time consuming. One other thing, if you go the normal route on the drivers side and remove the air pump, be careful about torquing the pulley back on. I just stripped the threads on one of mine. I got lucky and rethreaded it, bought a torque wrench and I am back in action. http://www.corvetteforum.cc/techtips/viewsubtopic.phpSubTopicID=45&TopicID=2
