Default Otpi Not Firing???

I don't think my opti is fring correctly.

I jsut replaced the cap & rotor last week. Now my idle is messed up. I bought a spark tested from sears, the kind that you just hold against the wire to see if there is spark. The spark doesn't seem to be consistent.

Is this just the tool?

Is this the opti?

How else can I diagnose the opti?

If the optical section of the Opti is faulty, you should be getting either a low-res or high-res fault code (code 16 or 36, if I recall correctly) or both of these codes.

If the high-voltage section of the Opti is faulty (presumably yours isn't, as you've just replaced it), you'll get a misfire that may include backfiring in the intake, exhaust, or both.

I'd suggest you check the installation of the coil wire and plug wires onto the Opti. Since this fault coincided with the cap/rotor job, I'd say there's a good bet one or more of the wires is not mated fully with the Opti, or possibly two wires may be crossed (but if you have two wires crossed, you'll notice the problem at all times, not only at idle).

Be well,

SJW

check the coil wire, too. if it's not set in right, there won't be enough zap.

Thanks guys.

I breathing a little easier now. As soon as the engine cools down I will check all the wires again.

I did a bad thing. I tried to save money & just buy the cap & rotor (MSD). I hope it doesn't come back to bite me.

Your profile indicates that your car's a '95. If this is the case, your odds of winning this gamble will be better than if your car was a '92 - '94, with the first-generation Opti.

So long as the shaft bearings hold up, and the unit doesn't take in any water or coolant, you may be able to squeeze many thousands of miles out of the Opti. The optical portion of the units seldom fail.

Update.

The gamble didn't pay off. You may have seen my current post. I replaced the hole opti with an OEM replacement.

Amazing. My idle problem is cured.

Thanks for all the help.

We win some, and we lose some. Glad you got it all resolved. Congrats.

Now go out and enjoy that car.
