Hi.
Without knowing morte than you told I would say that the noise can be the throw out bearing for the clutch. They tend to give sort of clacking noise on idle.
GM designed the dual mass flywheel to take away that noise. If the previous owner had to change out the clutch and flywheel, then he may have opted to install a single mass flywheel. The dual mass flywheels are about a $1000 a pop. If that's what happen the you'll have to live with it until you spend the big money on the dual mass, otherwise it's just another noise that these cars make.
What your describiing is common problem with a dual mass flywheel with worn or broken springs between the primary and secondary portions of the DM flywheel assembly
I had a 85 auto that all of a sudden started making a clanking sound that started out about every 3 sec then about 3 times a second. It did sound like flywheel was hitting the cover. The flywheel was replaced.

I highly doubt there is much wear on his 89' it only has about 21000 miles on it. it is a strange sound. he drives it like he is - a grandpa. never revs and always granny shifts.
Its got to be the flywheel I just changed my 1990 dmf cause it sounded like a bunch of rocks in the bell housing. Got mine from zfdoc for $750. If you go with a solid one you will get the same noise
Some of earlier [89] 6-speeds had this noise and had flywheel replaced under warranty. My car has had this problem that comes and goes for the approx dozen years I have owned car. 11,000 mile 89 Callaway appears to have had flywheel and transmission replaced under warranty. One friend had early 89 ZF-6 replaced at 1500 miles because of noise. Problem is not common in later low mile C-4's . Hope this helps
