I have 92 Vert w/39k on the clock. My problem is a noticable shake in the steering wheel at ~30 and 60 mph (Harmonics?). It seems worse when cold out. I have new KYB's on it and at 26K had the upper wheel bearings replaced. (Very early for excessive play in them, I thought.). I have had it aligned and Hunter balanced, (road force). The tech said there was nothing wrong with the balance nor suspension parts. Tires have been rotated and seemed to help a little. The car had 25K miles when I got it in 03 and had the original totally shot GSC tires on the front, i e .. cracked and chunked. Drove 400 miles home at less the 65 mph because of vibration. It got very little use for its first 8-9 years. Race Street Rally in Santa Clara Ca. test drove and couldn't feel anything amiss. Wheels? Tires? Driveshaft? Anybody seen this kind of a problem?
Thanks
Rick
I have about 13-15 K on Goodyear HP plus'. This condition has been there to some degree all along. I replaced the original GSC fronts ( the backs were new when I bought the car) at 25.5K.
Have the tires rebalanced and did you do a alignment after bearings and tires, making small changes in the alignment can cause big changes.
Also, you might have damage caused by the old tires. Also, check wheel bearings for play. You replaced the upper wheel bearings???
I have never heard of upper wheel bearings, do you mean upper ball joints?
You did not mention your tranny type.I have been chasing a similar problem except mine is RPM related @1200&2400rpm I get a shake from the engine I can feel through the steering wheel and I am 95% sure it is the tranny.
It could be the brake rotors are warped, but then again I got the same problem with the new goodyears GS3s I just bought. I think goodyear just has low manufacturing tolerances and they sell tires they know are out of round. With time and as the tires wear, the condition should improve.
My mistake, Replaced upper ball joints. When the balance was done I watched the tech wiggle the wheels while the car was on the rack. He noted a very slight play in one of the rear wheels. He thought it was not a problem.
