It can be done, but it stresses the sidewall. It will take two or three technicians to get the tire started on the rim, so the tire shop may refuse to do it, for liability reasons.
Over time, the 'crease' point along the inside of the tire's sidewall will degrade and flake off as small rubber pebbles, inside of the rim/tire. If you are doing it temporarily with some old/used tires, you could try it until you can buy new rims and tires. A Drag Radial would be a little more forgiving, and more resistant to sidewall distortion. I would advise against it if you have an expensive set of high perf. street radials and you like to drive fast.
I blew my budget under the hood last winter, can I squeeze 315's on my 9 - 1/2" sawblades ??????????
Thanks
Fred
Like I mentioned, The only 315 inch tire I even consider putting on a 9.5inch rim is the Nitto Drag Radial. It's not a true 315mm tire. My memory might be slipping, but I recall the 315 BFG are 12.5's inches wide, and the 315 Nitto's are 12.1 inches wide. And a Kumho MX in a 285/40/17 is around 11.5 inches wide. Take it for what its worth, but my 275/40/17 Nitto's look so skinny on my car imo. They dont measure up to my 275/40/17 Yokohama's AVS ES 100's. I have seen the 315 Nitto's on a 9.5 inch rim, and it didnt look bad at all, but the BFG 315 on a 9.5 bulges way to much, and is unsafe.
FYI. There are so many Mustang guys with 17x8 rims that run 275/40/17 Nitto's. Reason being because they arent a true 275mm. And thats a small 8 inch rim, You have an extra 1.5 inches.
Take care!
