When doing u turns and other sharp turns, there appears to be a groaning sound from the front of the car. Power steering fluid is at normal level and appears to be in good condition; not black or severely discolored. The drive belt is not cracked or shiney.
SLEV89,
Thanks for the recommendation. Some time I think it just needs to be driven more to keep all the seals in the Rack & Pinion lubed well. Maybe it will go away on its own
Make sure your power steering pump is bolted on securely. Some groaning is caused by loose PS pump bolts. All C4's will groan if turned to the locks. BTW, mine groans too!
scorp,
good thought.
but mine, when it does choose to happen, produces a significant vibrational feedback through the steering wheel.
also, mine will only really do this when i turn the wheels when static, or close to static, which i do very rarely - always rolling.
Positive it's from the front and not the rear? I don't doubt you, just want to rule out the differential fluid.
i agree!! i thought for well over a year it was up front somewhere and come to find out, when i had a new rear put in they never bothered with the additive. I changed gear oil last week and added a bottle of additive and it is perfect now. I cant tell you how many people thought it was the pump or the rack or the tensioner. Nothin but a $7 bottle of additive
Scorp,
Yes, it is definately from the front and the steering does not have to be at max. All of the mounting hardware has been double checked. This is a new condition, car has 38K miles; started about 100 miles ago. We put it on a lift and the noise is not there when the steering wheen is turned through the limits both left and right. But on the ground and rolling, then the noise is present. Discovered it when turning with the window down, it is barely perceptible when the windows are closed and the air is running.
Also the tires are in excellent condition and no unusual wear patterns.
