Default What is this?

My car has a jack so it's not a spare tire delete. When I looked up underneath where the spare should be I found this connected to the suspension. I suspect it is some sort of mod but I don't know.

My understanding is that car's that had spare tire delete had a i-beam of some sort installed where the spare tire was as a safety feature. Maybe the previous owner bought one and installed it.

Maybe someone else will chime in, but can you tell from your vin if your car was a spare tire delete car? Maybe it was and a previous owner bought a jack for your car.

That'd be my guess, Cold. The pix looks like factory welding to me.

The spare tire played a role in impact absorption in the event of a rear end collision. The factory installed these braces in place of a deleted spare tire.

Be well,

I always thought they deleted the jack as well. The car does have a jack.

Yeah, but a jack is easier to buy than a welded in piece like that I-beam.

Wouldn't a spare tire delete be listed in the list of options under the center console door?

Spare tire delete was option code N84 in 1996. I couldn't find a picture posted, but to my recollection the spare tire delete brace looks exactly like the picture you posted

It would make sense that they would have deleted the jack as well. Two possibilities come to mind:

1. An oversight at the factory. An assembler may have installed the jack in the car, overlooking the spare tire delete option on the build sheet.

2. A safety-conscious previous owner (presuming that you aren't the original owner) decided to ditch the spare, and bought & installed the brace.

Be well,

SJW

Just look under the console door or left storage door per the RPO sticky:

Should answer your question!

Cool... I'd heard of the delete option, but this is the first one I've ever seen.

you would think they would just delete the spare tire since they give you a $100 credit with the option.

So the car also, presumably, came equipped with EMTs and LTPWS?

Interesting that threre's a jack in the car. Gotta wonder if a previous owner ditched the EMTs, stowed a jack in the car, and tossed a spare tire in the hatch area for long trips.

My 95 vert came with the spare tire delete. That is a factory installed I beam (for impact absorption) and mine does not have a jack and didn't come with one, but has a tire tool.

It also has the YFS, YFR, and UJ6 RPO's. No sign of a tire being placed in the back. This car is near showroom condition. The jack is clean, no sign of ever being used. Tires have been changed to Nitto's.

In your second picture could you take a picture to the left and right?

I bought an impact bar and I'm trying to figure out how the bar mounts to the bumper. I see the holes in the frame for front two mounting points but the bumper has no holes....

Can you push the bar up near the bumper? hmm..

This may be your clue...if the previous owner took off the run flats, he may have thrown a jack in the car just in case...then if he had a flat on the road he could pull the tire and take it to be fixed...
