1987 overheating - Help - sequence ???
Having problems overheating in my 87 coupe L98 Auto.
Replaced the thermostat - no improvement
Replaced and flushed radiator - checked hoses - no apparent leaks
Having water pump replaced ( broken bolt
)
Where / What else to troubleshoot ?
Head gasket ?

Are you getting a check engine light? If so, what code? Is your main fan coming on at all?
How hot is it getting? On my '87, the temp guage in the dash was reading 205, but a data log showed coolant temp sensor readings never got above 190.
I believe a stock PROM calls for the main fan to come on at 225 deg F and shut off at 220 deg F.

. Make sure the main fan and secondary fan is coming on. Air in the coolant system will cause overheating.

I'm confused! anyway, the main problem most of us find is debri between radiator and condensor..but if you replaced the radiator then you would have seen the crap in there. On my 87 after I cleaned all the leaves, plastic bags etc. out of there I went with a lower temp switch,on 200-205, off 185, 180 thermostat. I wired it so both aux. fan and main fan come on together.Now it doesn't get hotter than 205-210 in stop and go, before it got as hot as 240!
